Norman Man stabbed in back

A Norman man was released from the hospital monday after being stabbed in the back. He cannot identify his assailant, but claims to have been stabbed in the back while taking out the trash.

This is crazy random! From someone living in Norman, who sometimes takes out the trash, I'm horrified! Sometimes, there are those garbage rats who are just hungry and territorial. Norman, be cautious.

Darkness Falls

Day turned into night, temperatures turned cooler in cities and villages teemed with amateur stargazers. The total eclipse started in India on Wednesday morning and moved eastward across Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Vietnam, China and parts of the Pacific. Total eclipses occur about twice a year as the moon passes between the Earth and the sun on the same plane as Earth's orbit. Wednesday's event lasted up to more than six minutes in some places.
Ok I have never seen an eclipse in my life! I believe one occurred when I was young and in day care however they felt it was a safety matter and didn’t let us see it. It is really a remarkable phenomenon considering how long it takes light to reach us. It takes 8 minutes for light to reach us and it is truly remarkable when it can be completely dark.

Obama Defends Health Care

The President is currently working on passing a reform, but a few issues still needed working out. Congress is currently debating various reform proposals. Certain questions keep posing disagreement. The primary concern that Americans are talking about is their result in paying for it. Obama has made it fairly certain he is not just planning to tax the middle class. But some are still in question of his decisions due to the economic crisis.
I am riding then fence on this issue. I somewhat agree this policy due to the fact countries such as Argentina has their medical issues covered if one is sick. However, the way our country is budgeted with hungry Americans only wanting more, we are too selfish to think of others. As a college student paying my own way, yes it would be easier to sleep at night knowing if I had a heart attack in my sleep I would be taken care of. But in this Country, I don’t see this ever happening.

22 Year HIV travel Ban May Be Lifted for Infected Visitors

22 years ago a travel ban was set for immigrants to not be granted into US soil infected with HIV/Aids.

Now, 22 years ago today, the Department of Health and Human Services or the HHS has issued regulations allowing foreigners with HIV to enter the country.

In 1987, Congress voted to impose a travel ban for the US having all immigrants who were infected with HIV denied from our country. Currently people with a communicable disease on the "banned" list can pay $545 to apply for travel ban waiver. according to http://www.medpagetoday.com/HIVAIDS/HIVAIDS/14964 Visitors could have applied for these waivers though some felt it would have branded them as HIV positive and jeopardize their future citizenship or career.

The AIDS advocates are excited for the plan to be lifted. When congress voted this law, they were wrongly feared that the disease could be spread through casual contact, said Dr. Michael Saag, incoming chairman on the HIV Medicine Association. Saag feels there is no scientific or health rationale for excluding people with HIV infection from the US and that it is an embarrassment.

If this ban were lifted it would allow 4,275 HIV-infected people into the country annually and a lifetime medical cost of $94 million for those admitted in just that first year!

Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, believes it becomes a matter of collective responsibility and cost. Also he claims to be in question as to why Americans should have to be in a position to pay for it. Others are also concerned that HIV positive visitors could possibly spread the disease.

MSNBC also states that more than 1.1 million people in the US are infected with HIV and more than 250,000 remain undiagnosed. Also that every year 56,000 people in the US are newly infected. Though some believe it to be a death sentence for these foreigners to be allowed into US soil, this ban was also reformed and allocated when it was thought HIV could spread by kissing or as little as hugging someone.

If people are not familiar with the issue are surprised at the proposal to reverse the ban, it's likely because they haven't kept up on the progress of the HIV spread and treatment, said Phil Curtis, director of government affairs for the AIDS Project of Los Angeles.

"Today we are one step closer to ending a discriminatory practice that stigmatizes those living with HIV, squanders our moral authority, and sets us back in the fight against AIDS," said Senator John Kerry. "By proposing this rule, the Obama administration has made a powerful statement in favor of overturning the HIV travel and immigration band that has no foundation in public health or common since. It is well past time for the US to act upon the HIV policies for immigration in this country. As scientific studies have increased it has now reached a point for drugs to be able to allow an HIV infected citizen to live a normal life span. Though it may cause our increases in infected citizens, maybe it will increase a cure in medicine.

Potter Frenzy

Harry Potter Half Blood Prince broke a record and made $20 million dollars in the midnight showing shattering the record of The Dark Knight ($18 million) and Star Wars ($17 million) . You can truly tell that the Sooner State has caught the Potter fever again. With all the theatres across the state completely sold out there is no wonder why this film won’t go down into history as the biggest film franchise.
College students, adults, children, all showed up in costumes who have grown up around Harry Potter in the past ten years were excited to see the film. The long witch robes and wands at hand and don’t forget the famous Potter glasses and a drawn on lightening scar.
I for one was part of the midnight showing and saw the midnight madness and as a potter fan myself I absolutely loved the excitement and the movie totally lived up the name as the summer highlight blockbuster.

Experienced Walkers Only -- IGNORED

An Australian man has spent 12 harrowing days in the New Wales South Mountains. He claimed to have slept under a log and wrapped in his jacket during his survival. This was not only ridiculously scary for him, but his family and search efforts were giving up hope. He failed to show up at a set of caves the day after he set out on a supposed day trip.

As an outdoor person myself, I am simultaneously scared and thrilled. Scared that this may happen to me at some point, in hostilities or maritime. Yet deep down, I'm simultaneously thrilled that I can have this story to tell at some point in the future. I know that's terrible, but who doesn't want to be survivorwoman for a few days. No one really, I'm crazy.

What is $9k when you make a million a year?

(To answer my own question, it's not even 1 percent of a million dollars.) A health plan is formulating in the US House of representatives. Bear in mind, this is an young, young bill. It will most likely be changed radically.

The current plan calls for raising taxes on the wealthiest americans, and employers which do not provide health care for their employees. The plan looks to expand health care coverage to those 50 million currently without coverage.

I personally see a national health care plan as a moral imperative. With 98% of people not paying any more taxes due to this plan, I can't see how that same 98% of people wouldn't support this. The tired act of Republicans to scare people with raising taxes, and governmental control are ridiculous. You're taxes won't go up, and you're health is already controlled by a group of people trying to make a profit off of your health.

That makes true sense.

Helicopters, AC Units, NEW EVENT CENTER!

Released yesterday, my hometown church had 12 AC units put into the new events center. The church has felt its importance of remaining in downtown Wylie and being a part of its historical venue. The new AC units were placed from helicopters onto the roof of the church. This new events center will host the church offices and any banquet type events.

I feel that in my old community and home town, there does need to be some renovating. Our historical 1950s buildings hold many of our home town restaurants and the FBC of Wylie. I am happy to see the community is coming together to support the old town by renovating it to keep it a part of the community. Moving the FBC out of Wylie to a new location would be devastating to the town and would have one big abandoned building.

Diabetes+Medications=Heart Failure? :/

In this newly released article it is discussing the risks of cancer and cardiovascular problems with diabetes medications. Lantus, Advandia, and Actos are all being studied under a close watch to the symptoms they may cause in diabetes patients.
I feel Americans these days are primarily focused on alleviating pain with medication, medication, medication! However, most producers of these products are all about money and do not care about what happens with the risks. Though the proper risks are labeled on the medication bottle, you know, “may cause heart problems, high blood pressure, etc.” But hello! If you have drugs still listed on the market that are facing law suits..why do people keep purchasing and doctors keep proscribing. I think it’s time we do more research on products before they become harmful in too many patients’ hands.

Time to get Climactic with our Weather!

The authors of How to Get Climate Policy Back on Course present a new statdegy of emissions. Source says cuts have failed and will continue to fail.
They want G8 nations and emerging economies to try to improve efficiency and decarbonising energy supply. “LSE Mackinder programme director, Gwyn Prins, said the current system of trying to attain the carbon emissions then allow trading in emissions permits had led to emissions continuing to rise.” The report is published by the London School of Economics' (LSE) Mackinder Programme and the University of Oxford's Institute for Science, Innovation & Society.

I feel it is an energy suffiecient program. The way the world is today with gas prices, oil prices, importing and exporting expenses, we do need to find ways to protect our Ozone and energy. This unstable economy around the globe needs to finance and begin saving money and developing plans to make that happen! All in aggreance?

Noah aboards his arch and will lead his herd!

For the last two seasons, Noah Cheshier’s primary responsibilities were blocking, running and catching. However this fall, he is starting as the quarterback for the pirates. The incoming senior takes over from Baylor-bound Jerod Monk, who guided the Pirates to a state title game appearance in 2008.
I was a big football follower of the Wylie pirates during my high school career. However, coming to sooner land I am now focusing all my attention on the football program here. But I am friends with Noah’s family, and guys keep a look out for him…he will do great!

Swine Flu increasing? but it isnt flu season!!!

BBC repots swine flu cases are increasing across the UK with over 100,000 cases daily. Sources say the swine flu epidemic is now becoming less able to contain. These viral cases have typically been ceased when treated at mild symptoms. However, now most cases are becoming more severe.
Honestly, I thought the swine flu cases ceased when everyone stopped talking about it or making jokes. No one mentions the swine flu cases anymore. Possibly because it is summer time and the flu cases are less severe. But for the UK it looks increasingly severe. I just hope these cases do not become severe in the US.

Big Blake is an LA Clipper

Former Sooner athlete and great friend, Blake Griffin, was chosen as the NO.1 draft pick to the Los Angeles Clippers. Blake has been an excellent basketball player for the Sooners for four years averaging 22.7 points a game and 14.4 rebounds this past season. Blake is an exhilarating player and mastermind of the court and prestigious ball handler that will play well in the NBA.
I have known Blake for two years, he dated my teammate and we were well aquinated with OU’s study hall policy. He is a great guy and just a few days ago had a chat with him and he is very excited with the Clippers already. He has been in San Francisco the last four months training and preparing himself for the NBA.

Former Friend and High School Athlete Selected to National Team

Former Wylie Pirate, Ashleigh McCord, was selected to the Junior National Volley Ball team this summer to compete in Mexico. McCord has played at Rice for the past year receiving the Freshman New Comer award. The freshman led Rice to the second NCAA appearance.

Ashleigh was one of my friends I grew up with in high school. She was always a very dominant athlete whether she was on a basketball court or volley ball court. She was a great friend to have and always one of those girls you would look at and say “she will go far.” I know she will do great in Mexico and will lead her team very far in the competition.

Nationalized Pop Star Maybe Murdered?

Pop star Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest at age 50. However, Jacksons on call house doctor was assisting him with his addiction to drugs by helping cease the matter. But investigators say the doctor’s car was towed and found possible drugs that could have left Jackson unresponsive to CPR and lead to cardiac arrest. Thought post-mortem tests will not be ran on Jackson’s body for about 4 weeks.

I feel this can be controversial due to what people believe by what the press submits these days. However, I believe having the doctor under investigation is a probable cause. But us Americans these days are always pointing fingers to blame.

Re-Election for the THIRD time raises protests

Mamadou Tandja has governed the West African nation since 1999 serving two terms. His term is ending and he is requesting for a third term. This request has raised protests and been criticized by internatonal donors. Some supporters believe he has brought economic growth because of the threatened independence.

I feel that not resigning the president in office offers the door for opportunity. Our country had opposed the Bush administration for years God knows what would happen if he was re-elected. Though there are many in disagreement with Obama but he is offering change to our government which this nation needs. I believe there needs to be different leaders for different times so I agree why there are protests with the reelection.

Wrong Place at the Wrong time..Not Once, Not Twice, but THREE Times

In recent news, Mexico has dealt with large problems of drug trafficking. Just when they thought it could not get any worse, Mexican Navy reveals nearly a ton of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of frozen sharks. On the southeastern port of Progreso and Yucatan State, the navy inspectors detected something “fishy” in a routine x-ray. After the questioning ceased, the navy cut a shark open to only reveal black bags loaded with cocaine. A total of 870 packages weighing 894 kilograms were discovered.

The “drug-dealing” job is becoming more difficult for dealers as the US and Mexico have stepped up drug enforcement efforts. I feel that on the dealers part, it was a clever idea; however, for this Mexican Navy, the dealers are going to have to rethink their plans as our military forces strengthen their effort to cease drug trafficking.

Pregnant mom stabbed on her newspaper route

Jenna Nielson was 22 years old when her and her 8 ½ month pregnant child had their lives ended on June 14, 2007 in Raliegh, North Carolina . She was on her newspaper route to help make her families ends meet at 3:30 am she was stabbed to death. Police authorities believe she was at the wrong place at the wrong time and that it might have been a sexual assault attempt. It has been marked a two year anniversary and still now suspects have been announced.

I believe this to be debilitating to the friends and family of this young woman. It is unfortunate that there has not been a suspect named. However, in the world today as violent as these crimes may seem, it occurs daily.

Toddler in critical condition after falling into pool

On Saturday, May 2^nd, 2009, a Wylie toddler fell into critical condition after drowning in a pool. According to the police this took place at 11:45 a.m. by Lake Travis. Care flight was immediately called and arrived in minutes. Family was performing CPR on toddler when help arrived. Medics quickly took over CPR but it wasn’t enough. The child still remains in critical condition at the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.

I feel that there should be more accountability placed on parents with young children. Every time we read the news it never fails to see another infant drowned in either a bathtub or a pool. Where is the accountability parents? You do not ever see animals leaving their young unattended, why do we, we are supposed to be the smarter ones at the top of the food chain! I feel their needs to be action taken, and the first question I asked was where was the life vest and where was everyone else while the toddler was wandering around the pool?
